| A new variety club is raising a laugh
on the city's entertainment scene, writes Bob Hillier.
Sunday saw the second outing of Peterborough's latest live music and comedy showcase - the Knuts Club. Based in the Tara Suite at the Solstice the fun kicked off at 8pm. Opening its doors on the first Sunday of each month, the club is a lively format of talent sourced locally and beyond. It's the perfect tonic for those gloomy winter evenings. Funny man John Elson fronts the music and laughter. |

Bob Lucas as Billy Connolly headlined the latest show. With his uncanny physical resemblance to the Big Yin, including the unmistakable mannerisms he soon had the audience in raptures. Lucas actually lives South of the border, in Cambridge. Being a former social worker, he has no problem with hecklers and revels in audience participation. His first gig was apparently in Spain, where he was paid in Paella. Having never met the Scottish comic icon, Lucas says, "He must know about me, but the ball's in his court to contact me!" Also included on the bill were Spoondini (aka Mark Slater) with his amazing magnetic powers. Metal utensils such as spoons and irons stick to his hands and face by invisible forces. Comedienne Cecilia Smart and adult stand up Cassidy also featured. The comedy was punctuated with a good mix of up and coming musical talent, including highly rated local punk band Radicus and jazz ensemble That's Jazz. With new outfit Dekadence opening the show, the enthusiastic audience certainly had their money's worth. The next Knuts Club evening is on Sunday November 7. Tickets are £6 in advance and £8 on the night. For more information, go to www.knuts-club.co.uk October 2004 |
